Fast, light, tracks well, and effortlessly glides across the water after each stroke. Manufactured by British Columbia based Current Design, this pre-2007 Kestrel is a work of art and unique in the fact that the paddler is actually seated nearly as low as a sit-in style. This particular hull design allowed a narrow, 26” beam with a low center of gravity to provide comfortable stability.
Weighing a mere 44 pounds, this is perhaps the lightest SOT kayak you will come across. It’s made from a fiberglass/Kevlar composite material that is both light and durable, making loading and transportation a one-person operation.
Features include front and back hatches; the front hatch is double sealed for dry storage. Bungee cords crisscross the bow and stern to securely hold gear. Aftermarket paddle cord installed. Adjustable high back padded seat with rear, zippered, storage pocket included. A forward scup drains water from the foot well. Forward and rear tee handles.
Forward Hatch: 8″ dia. (20.32 cm)
Front Hatch Vol: 10 gal. (38 L)
Weight: 44 lbs. (19.9 kg.)
Max. Load*: 350 lb. (157.5 kg)
Hull: Shallow “V”
Cockpit Type: Recreational
Rear Hatch: 16.5″ x 11″ (41.91 cm x 27.94 cm)
Rear Hatch Volume: 18.5 gal. (70.3 L)
The kayak is in fair condition. The bottom is scratched, but not deeply scarred. The fiberglass has a chip in a few places as shown in the photos; these are cosmetic and do not affect the hull integrity. If you are in search for a lighter kayak that is easy to load on top of a car or carried to the water, this may be the one for you.
I have two of these kayaks. I plan to keep one for myself. You can take your pick between them. One kayak has two, flush mounted rod holders placed behind the seat. The other does not have rod holders.
